When you’re on the hunt for the speediest NBN plan available, the sheer range of options, providers and contracts can be a little baffling. Some telcos are offering what should be the same speed for half the price of others, so what’s the catch?

Before rushing to sign up to a high-speed NBN1000 plan, there are a couple of caveats you should be aware of. This tier is only available on two types of NBN connection – fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC). And while all FTTP connections can sign up for 1000Mbps, that speed will only work with a select subset of HFC installations – estimated to be roughly 7% of the total.

Aussie has rightly cautioned potential customers that it’s yet to determine definitive numbers on peak evening speeds, though it’s put forward 215Mbps as its baseline, so you’ll at the very least get that.

As is becoming popular, you’ll get a bit of a discount on your first few months – six months specifically. But even once the price jumps up an extra AU$15 per month, it’s still one of the best value NBN100 plans on the market right now thanks to its unlimited data, solid evening speeds (83Mbps), and no lock-in contract. With this offer, you can either BYO modem or spend AU$119.90 upfront to get one from Tangerine direct.

Cheapest NBN100 plan
This is an excellent offering from Superloop – not only is it the cheapest NBN100 plan on the market, it’s also the fastest. The telco is promising a typical evening speed of 90Mbps, which is one of the best you can get for this tier. The caveat here is that you’ll be limited to 500GB of data each month, so consider your needs before buying. Fastest Telstra NBN plan
If you’re looking for the fastest NBN plan from Australia’s top telco, this NBN100 plan is it. If you make the switch to Telstra, you’ll save AU$20 on your monthly bill for the first three months, which brings the cost down to AU$90. After that, it’ll rise to AU$110 each month. For the price, you’ll get an average speed of 88Mbps during peak periods, which is only bested by Superloop’s 90Mbps. If you stick with the telco for 24 months, you won’t have to pay for the Telstra Smart Modem (usually AU$216) and you’ll have your connection fee waived when you sign up online. Other perks include a free three-month subscription to Binge. Please note however that Telstra’s NBN100 plan is only available to those with a FTTP or HFC connection.

Fastest TPG NBN plan

TPG is a popular telco among Aussies because it offers solid, reliable speeds at an affordable price. It has also consistently performed well in the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) speed test report, and delivers speeds of up to 80.1Mbps during the peak evening period. If you sign up for this NBN100 plan on an 18-month contract, TPG will waive the AU$99 setup fee, though a AU$10 delivery fee applies, as well as a AU$20 home phone deposit. You can also get this same plan on a no lock-in contract, though it’s an additional AU$130 upfront with all fees included. Note that you could face a contract payout fee of up to AU$350 if you decide to leave early.

Live-updated NBN100 deals
While the speed tier that a service uses is indicative of the level of download and upload speeds that can be obtained (i.e. NBN100 should be up to 100Mbps), this will vary with actual usage.
Thankfully, telcos are now required to advertise a "typical evening speed" to give you a better indication of what you'll be facing in reality. For NBN100, we're generally seeing "typical evening speeds" between 75-85Mbps.
