iQoo 5 series: release date, price, news and leaks

The iQoo 5 series is the new flagship from the gaming sub-brand of Vivo. As always, it brings many new features and specifications to a relatively low price point. As a successor to the iQoo 3 which made its debut in India in February, it has big responsibilities on its shoulders.

iQoo has been one of the most disruptive brands of recent years. The iQoo 3, which made its global debut in India, continues to be the cheapest smartphone in India with the Snapdragon 865 chipset. While we still don’t know if the iQoo 5 will be available outside China, it is shaping up to be an exciting device nonetheless.

The series consists of the iQoo 5 and iQoo 5 Pro, with only a few specification differences between the two. While they are technically gaming smartphones, current specifications suggest that they will be great all-rounders as well.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next flagship; successor to the iQoo 3
  • When is it coming? August 17 in China, possibly soon to India
  • How much will it cost? Starting CNY 3,998 (~Rs 43,000)

iQoo 5 release date and price

The iQoo 5 series is now official in its home country with a big launch on August 17.  The iQoo 5 stars at CNY 3,998 (~Rs 43,200) and the iQoo 5 Pro starts at CNY 5,498 (~Rs 59,300). The company has also unveiled a Flash charge car charger which is priced at CNY 199.

iQoo India has been vaguely teasing a racing-centric announcement for August 21. It doesn't explicitly mention that it will be a phone launch, but that's what we're expecting.

iQoo's first 'Pro' device comes in partnership with BMW M Motorsport, creating two really cool device colourways - carbon fibre black and racing stripe white (not the official names). Things are even more interesting on the inside as the iQoo 5 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset with up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage.

The biggest feature on the iQoo 5 Pro is the 120W fast charging, which can take the phone's 4,000mAh battery from 0 to full in just about 15 minutes, making it the fastest charging phone.

The other big upgrade comes with the display, as it finally moves to a high refresh rate panel. We get a curved 6.56-inch AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution, HDR10+ certification and 120Hz refresh rate.

Even the cameras get a sizeable upgrade, bringing a new triple camera array that is borrowed from the Vivo X50 Pro Plus. There's a new 50MP camera (Samsung GN1 sensor) that is supposed to be great for low-light photography, followed by a 13MP ultra-wide lens and an 8MP periscopic telephoto lens that has an optical zoom of 5x and can go up to 60x.

The iQoo 5 is very similar to its elder sibling when it  comes to the specifications. The biggest difference is the slower 55W charging for the 4,500mAh battery. It opts for a flat display instead of the curved one, but retains the 120Hz refresh rate. Lastly, the periscopic lens is replaced by a standard 13MP 2x telephoto camera. It comes in two gradient glass back finishes - grey and blue.

iQoo 5 series price

In China, the iQoo 5 starts at CNY 3,998 which converts to about Rs 43,500, while the iQoo 5 Pro starts at CNY 4,998 which is equivalent to Rs 54,000. If they do launch in India, expect the price to be slightly higher.
